Story
109 years ago the Sopwith Aviation Company designed and started manufacturing the prettiest and best airplane of all time: the Sopwith Triplane (AKA the 'Tripehound'), and now in 2025 this mighty aircraft will once again triumphantly take to the air as part of the Moomba Birdman Rally. And we're not talking about a model triplane, or a small replica of a triplane ..... we're talking about a full size replica in its full 8m tri-wingspan glory.
This plan is, quite frankly, ridiculous and is obviously pushing the boundaries of good sense and tempting hubris. But that's exactly what the birdman rally is all about: idiotic people riding idiotic craft in an idiotic manner. It's the perfect storm of lunacy, and Scott is determined to become a perfect loon.
Scott first took part in the Moomba birdman rally way back in 2004 and has now been taking part almost half his life and this may be his biggest and most foolish attempt yet, and it remains to be seen whether he even has the slightest chance of: A) making a full size replica of a Sopwith Triplane to start with, B) figuring out how to get a full size Sopwith Triplane from his house to Birrarung Marr, C) getting a full size Sopwith Triplane up the narrow walkway onto the birdman platform at all, and D) picking up a full size Sopwith Triplane by himself and running to the edge of the platform before he can even attempt to 'fly'. There are many many reasons why this plan could completely fail at any step of the process between now and March 9 and we invite you to come share Scott's idiotic journey.
